If you buy or sell by weight, yes. You need an NTEP-approved, legal-for-trade scale, and your state's weights and measures office places it in service and can inspect it. A certificate of accuracy is your own record of the calibration, not the state's approval.
How often should a scale be calibrated?
It depends on how hard the scale works and on what your state or auditor requires. Tell us how you use it in your request. Want it handled every year? Ask for an annual calibration plan.
